Tell me about your obsessions.
Our workshop teacher was passionate and engaged as she shared this prompt with us, a group of women who’d signed up to learn about writing personal essays. I’d never heard anyone talk about obsessions as if they were good things. Obsessions were for the crazed and addicted in my frame of mind, not for the ordinary writer. And yet, the prompt unlocked something in me. Permission, maybe? Room to be honest? To tell the truth, at least to myself, about the things keeping me up at night.
